Thanks for the comment about country music. I guess these women just haven't done it for me. Most males out there think Shaina Twain is hot...they watch her videos on MTV with the stereo cranked on some heavy music. Smile

Pussycat dolls are here to stay, and stay they will at the top of the charts.

The brash, saucy Pussycat Dolls are planning to be America's Spice Girls, they tell Naomi West

The British listening public would be wise to brace itself this week for the latest soon-to-be-inescapable US musical export, the Pussycat Dolls. From record boss Ron Fair, who gave the world Christina Aguilera and her chaps, comes a saucy burlesque troupe-turned-pop act whose super-brash debut single Don't Cha has held the No 1 slot in the American pop charts for six weeks, and is trouncing all contenders for the same heights in the UK this weekend.

Sassy and classy: the Pussycats' target market is 'MTV, not the Playboy Channel'
With their buttock-grazing miniskirts, bare midriffs and loud protestations about female empowerment, it appears that America may finally be taking revenge for the Spice Girls.

Senior Doll Carmit Bachar adores the comparison. "We want to pick up where they left off," she insists. "This is for MTV, not the Playboy Channel," agrees Fair.

Accordingly, gathered on and around a sofa in a smart central London hotel suite, Bachar, Nicole Scherzinger, Melody Thornton, Jessica Sutta, Kimberly Wyatt and Ashley Roberts are dressed in a not-especially-racy selection of jeans, denim skirts and tracksuit bottoms. They are promoting Don't Cha, a mid-tempo bump 'n' grind number featuring garrulous raps from Busta Rhymes and plenty of purring, panting backing vocals.

It has taken more than a decade for the Pussycat Dolls to reach this juncture. The original Dolls, none of whom are involved now, were a cabaret act created by LA-based dancer and choreographer Robin Antin

from dancers on the music video circuit. In 1995 they were booked to perform at Johnny Depp's Viper Room club through Antin's flatmate, the actress Christina Applegate. With an ever-changing, lingerie-clad cast, they became the club's regular Thursday-night opening act, performing to admirers including Leonardo DiCaprio, Hugh Hefner and Marilyn Manson.

"The celeb guests were what really got the buzz going," says Bachar, who started performing a contortionist act during the show 10 years ago and is the longest-serving of the present six. Gwen Stefani loved their act enough to join them on stage in 2000, and fellow exhibitionists Paris Hilton, Brittany Murphy, Scarlett Johansson and Charlize Theron followed, all strutting for free.

Stefani also brought the act to the attention of Interscope records chairman Jimmy Iovine. He and Fair, the president of A&M Records, saw the germ of a lucrative pop concept.

It has taken years, rather than months, for Fair - who blonde-mohawked Southern girl Kimberly Wyatt describes as "the most intimidating man I ever met" - to fashion a band to his satisfaction. To supplement the best dancers from the existing troupe, whose collective experience included hoofing on cruise ships and gyrating as Ricky Martin's Livin' La Vida Loca girl, he needed voices, recruiting Thornton from an open audition and Scherzinger, a glossy-locked Hawaiian who had been part of Eden's Crush, an ill-fated girl group from the American version of Popstars, as lead singer.

Then came the material. "At first everybody was submitting really tacky songs," grimaces Scherzinger. "Like 'miaow, miaow'… stuff about pussy power, bad kitties."

It took 18 months to assemble an entertainingly varied album, PCD, which includes hook-laden contributions from writers and producers such as Rich Harrison (Amerie) and Timbaland (Missy Elliot), alongside bodacious covers of standards like Sway and a brass-parping Right Now.

But the album is just part of the burgeoning PCD brand. There is a Pussycat Dolls Lounge in Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas, which opened in April 2005, a make-up range with Stila, and the inevitable clothing line.

The aim now is "to not scare anybody away - be likeable by all types, all ages, all genders," explains dancer Ashley Roberts. Their lyrics might be a bit provocative - the chorus to their current hit runs "Don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me", and Beep, the next single, makes liberal and hilarious use of an expletive deleter ("I don't give a beep, if you're lookin at my beep") - but the Don't Cha video is no more titillating than any of J.Lo's or Beyoncé's, and a good deal less than Christina Aguilera's sweat-drenched Dirrty promo.

"We're very sensitive about what we do, or don't do," insists Scherzinger. "We're sassy and classy."

Bachar talks about a radio phone-in the previous day in Paris and is unable to bring herself to repeat some of the questions asked by the listeners. "They literally had us shocked. They were cursing, and so sexually orientated that we were taken aback."

"All I could say was, 'Go get our album. And God bless you,' " adds Scherzinger, in a schoolmarmish tone.
