Assault On Precinct 13,the 2004 remake, suprisingly met my expectations.Assualt On Precinct 13 is an great film with no dull moments.Storyline isn't bad,but the strong violence makes it a worthy view.Assualt On Precinct 13 stars Ethan Hawke,Laurence Fishburne,Drea de Matteo,Ja Rule,Gabriel Byrne,John Leguizamo and Maria Bello. The story is simple and I won't give any of it away until you gamble and rent or buy it.Out of 7,7 being brilliant,I'd give Assualt On Precinct 13 a 5 for being better than average and a real good remake to John Carpenters original 70's classis Assualt On Precinct 13,which was good for its time.
Mr Film leaving the scene.Enjoy the flick and come back for more.

| I didn't want to watch this one.. but maybe I will reconsider and I will give you my thoughts on Assault On Precinct 13 afterwards.... but first I am off to the new Star Wars Revenge of the Sith. I have been waiting for the crowds to get a bit smaller... now it is time! |

Okay so I watched Assault On Precinct 13. I want to start by saying it didn't suck nearly as much as I thought it would.
John Leguizamo who played the strung out junkie played his part perfectly. I do not usually like John Leguizamo but in this movie he was excellent and I feel he stole the show. It is too bad he didn't play a bigger role in this film as he was that good IMO.
It has been a while since Brian Dennehy had a major part in a movie and it was good to see him again. Brian Dennehy is a very good supporting actor and he was good again in Assault on Precinct 13. His career is long and distinguished, just look at a few of his movies; Summer Catch (2001), Romeo + Juliet (1996), Tommy Boy (1995), Gladiator (1992), F/X2 (1991), Cocoon: The Return (1988), Return to Snowy River (1988), F/X (1986), Silverado (1985), Cocoon (1985) and First Blood (1982) just to name a few. I remember Brian Dennehy from a TV series when I was a kid about a detective who would help down and out people. It was a great series but I cannot remember what it was called. If anyone knows what the show was called please let me know. Brian's character an old Irish cop who was on his last day before retirement was well played.
Ethan Hawk, Dre de Matteo and Maria Bello were also good in this film but they didn't provide the stand out performance that was needed to make Assault On Precinct 13 a great film.
The problems with this show are simple. They need to find the person who was their advisor on how the S.W.A.T team operates and shoot them. On too many occasions the attackers would storm the building in units of one guy, two guys or even three guys. The problem is they were supposed to have at least 33 men to put in play so why would they give up their advantage in numbers? Why wouldn't the S.W.A.T team members coordinate and attack together working on the front door, back door, roof top and side windows? To storm a defended building where there are at least 5 people (4 of which are trained police officers) who are armed with at least standard police issue weapons and attack with only 1, 2, or 3 men at a time is ludicrous. The trained snipers were great at some points in the movie and in the next scene they were so inept its surprising they didn’t shoot themselves. For some reason a sniper couldn’t shoot a target who was hiding behind a snow bank. A snow bank you say? That’s right, I said it, and a snow bank thwarted their attack. Darn snow, who knew it would actually prevent a sniper from taking a shot. To top it all off at the end of the movie... the SWAT team members seem to forget that it is snowing and that they can track people in the snow by their foot prints. They also forget that all they have to do is listen for the sounds of their prey walking in the snow to get a fix on their position.... guess what... you can't walk in 5 inches of snow and not make a sound. These so called S.W.A.T team members were also equipped with night vision goggles which for some reason did not provide the advantage one would expect in the dark... not sure how that works.
One other piece of cheese was the Die Hard 2 rip off when Ethan Hawkes character while in a fight for his life, kills a bad guy with an icicle. The rip off was so blatant, and so transparent, that before it Ethan kills the bad guy you have time to pray that they don't do what you think they will.... and then they do.
Enough harping on the bad portions of the movie. Assault on Precinct 13 was entertaining, violent and exciting for most of the movie. If you are willing to overlook the obvious flaws in the script, you will enjoy this movie. I would give Assault on Precinct 13, a 6.5 out of 10 and a worth renting. John Leguizamo role was so well played that Assault on Precinct 13 is worth watching for that reason alone. I had no idea that Leguizamo could be that good an actor.
If you are a military type enthusiast, or if you work on a S.W.A.T team, or if you are affiliated with the military, a paint ball team or you simply have strategic rubber band flicking training you might find this movie so unbelievable and the strategy used by the S.W.A.T team so inept you just cannot enjoy it.
The decision is yours... watch it if you are in the mood for a knock ‘em down and fight it out kind of show. Despite my ranting it is actually better then I thought it would be.
If you are looking for a realistic depiction of police tactics, run away... and run fast. |
