I was flipping threw the channels yesterday and I came across the classic film Heat. What a great show. It had been a long time since I had seen it last, and I forgot how great a shoot out scene it has. The part where De Nero and his gang are coming out of the bank and Al Pacino and his group of police are there waiting is extremely well done. Just before getting in the get away car, Val Kilmer's character Chris Shiherlis, spots the police waiting in ambush and let loose with his automatic weapon. The gun fight must go on for 10 minutes threw the crowded streets, bad guys and good guys locked in commando style gun battle threw the streets of Los Angeles.
I especially like the fact that you see people run out of ammo and have to reload in the middle of the fight. Most Hollywood films forget that bullets are not in endless supply. At one point De Nero' character, Neil McCauley, work a run and cover type operation with Val Kilmer's character much like you would expect trained military personal would.
I am not saying this is the greatest shoot out ever.... but I am saying I am having a hard time coming up with one better. Maybe you guys might have a suggestion on the best gun fight scenes ever. I am trying to come up with one that is based somewhat on reality… so Starship Troopers doesn’t count Mr. Film.
For those of you who haven't watched Heat yet.... what are you waiting for. This is a very good movie... and one of Natalie Portman's first too.
Check it out. |

| Michael Mann's Heat is a calssic. How about John Woo's A Better Tomorrow II starring Chow Yun Fat. At the climatic crazed end of this film, you will be truly entertained by an onslaught of bullets, blood, and a high bodycount. The film has subtitles for those who hate to read and watch. Another Woo classic is Hard Boiled starring Chow Yun Fat. The film is insane with mindblowing action sequences and shootout scenes. You have to see it to believe it. Check them out sometime. |

| They're not my top choices. Heat is, but A Better Tomorrow and Hard Boiled are excellent action flicks unlike anything you've seen before. There are some others out there with fantastic shootout scenes like Kevin Costner's 'Open Range' western co-starring Robert Duvall. At the end of Open Range is a worthwhile cowboy shootout. 'True Romance' starring Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper, Tom Sizemore, Chris Penn, Michael Rapaport, Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman, and Samuel L. Jackson has an awesome shootout scene at the end. A must see and own. Tony Scott's best with the magic of Quintin Tarantino's script. |

The movie Heat was indeed a one of the best shoot-outs I have seen before.
Another good one is The Matrix, when Neo and Trinity go into the office building to save Morfius.
Now with that said, the only thing that would have made it better is a little less stunts, like doing a cart wheel, mid-cart wheel grabbing a M-16, shootong it while finishing the cart wheel
Other than that it would have to place in my top three movie shoot- outs.
Another one is Clint Eastwood in " A Fist Full of Dollars", especially when he put the stove lid under his shirt, got shot and then got back up. |
