Jenna Elfman Biography

Jenna Elfman was born Jennifer Mary Butala in Los Angeles, California, to Sue Grace (a housewife) and Richard Wayne Butala, a Hughes Aircraft executive, of Croatian descent. Jenna attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts as a dance major and graduated in 1989. Her uncle is Tony Butala of The Lettermen. She studied with acting teacher Milton Katselas at the Beverly Hills Playhouse before beginning her television career. Jenna's career started off with numerous appearances in TV commercials. Jenna then began appearing on many TV shows in a guest star role before landing the role of Dharma in the hit ABC television show "Dharma & Greg" (1997). The TV sitcom Dharma & Greg ran for five years on ABC from 1997 to 2002 before finally going off the air.

In 1991 Jenna converted to Scientology, which she had been introduced to by Bodhi Elfman. She married him in 1995, making noted composer Danny Elfman her uncle-in-law. Jenna has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Church, telling Scientology magazine Celebrity (February 2005) that she's "out to help her fellow Scientologists 'clear the planet' of aliens." (A fundamental tenet of Scientology is that dead alien souls known as Body Thetans placed here by an alien named Xenu are the cause of mankind's problems.)

Her first starring role in a film was in Krippendorf's Tribe (1998), alongside Richard Dreyfuss. She won a Golden Globe award for her role in "Dharma & Greg" and has since appeared in such films as Keeping the Faith (2000), Edtv (1999), Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and Keeping the Faith.

In November 2005, CBS announced that Courting Alex will be a midseason replacement, premiering in January 2006.
