Scarlett Johansson Biography

Scarlett Johansson was born November 22, 1984 in New York, New York. Johansson's father was born in Denmark, and mother Melanie Sloan comes from a Bronx-bred Jewish family while her maternal ancestors originally came from Poland. The granddaughter of writer Ejner Johansson, she graduated from The Professional Children's School in Manhattan in 2002.

Her roles include Grace MacLean in The Horse Whisperer, Rebecca in Ghost World, Charlotte in Lost in Translation, Griet in Girl with a Pearl Earring, and Francesca in The Perfect Score. All of these performances have earned Scarlett positive critical notice. Scarlett has been nominated for two best actress awards at the Golden Globes in 2003, one for drama (Girl with a Pearl Earring) and one for comedy (Lost in Translation). Scarlett was also nominated for best actress for both of those films at the BAFTAs, and where she won best actress for Lost in Translation. Johansson has also branched out to be the voice of Princess Mindy in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.

Scarlett Johansson was attached for a short time to the upcoming film Mission: Impossible III, but allegedly dropped out of the project after a dinner date with Tom Cruise and a roomful of Scientologists which didn't go well. Johansson dropped out oficially because of scheduling conflicts.

In July 2005, Johansson starred with Ewan McGregor in the Michael Bay-directed, The Island. It was her debut as the female lead in a mainstream action film. When the movie opened to weak reviews and an even weaker box office, the producers of the film accused Johansson of failing to connect or attract a mainstream audience. It is strange that this movie didn't do well at the box office as I for one really enjoyed it.
