Summer's father is a general contractor and her mother is a schoolteacher. A rigourous ballet training schedule required that Summer be home schooled by he mother from grades 3 to 12. Summer trained and performed as a dancer throughout her teenage years until a serious injury forced her to take time away to heal. While she was healing, during a visit with some friends in Los Angeles she landed her first acting job. With the experience being enjoyable, she made the decision to move to LA and began working steadily as an actor and dancer. Summer's first big break came in television where she landed a guest spot on Joss Whedon's ANGEL TV Series, in the now classic episode "Waiting in the Wings". Summer was able to demonstrate her ballet training, combined with grace and beauty she was an instant hit. Soon after, she was cast in Whedon's new series, Firefly, playing the role of River. Since the end of Firefly, Summer has appeared on the CBS series Cold Case, and the MGM feature Sleepover. She has currently been working on Universal's feature film Firefly: Serenity".
