Winona Ryder Biography

Winona Ryder, born Winona Laura Horowitz and changed her name, after her the town in which she was born, Winona Minnesota, is one of the best-known of the so-called "Generation X" actors.

She grew up in a ranch commune in Northern California where there was no electricity. She is the Goddaughter of Timothy Leary and her parents were friends of Beat poet Allen Ginsberg and once edited a book called "Shaman Woman Mainline Lady" an anthology of writings on the drug experience in literature - this included one piece by Louisa May Alcott.

Winona's best known an most memorable roles came early in her career as the ghoulish daughter in Beetlejuice (1988, with Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis). Winona followed Beetlejuice up with solid roles in offbeat films like Heathers (1989) and Edward Scissorhands (1990, opposite her then boyfriend Johnny Depp), as well as big budget features such as Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence in 1992 and Alien: Resurrection (1997, with Sigourney Weaver).

Later, branching out to show her talent, Winona starred in and was the executive producer of Girl, Interrupted (1999, with Angelina Jolie).

Ryder was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Jo in Little Women (1994) On 12 December 2001 Ryder was arrested and charged with shoplifting from a Saks Fifth Avenue store in Beverly Hills; after a trial the next year, she was found guilty of felony grand theft and vandalism, and sentenced to three years' probation, fines and 480 hours of community service time.
